City tour Le Conquet
Why take advantage?
La Petite Cité de Caractère® welcomes you for a cultural stroll punctuated by 10 enameled lava panels. A detailed booklet of the "Five centuries of stone and sea" tour is on sale for €1 at Le Conquet tourist information office. The route of the town tour is also available on the Le Conquet town map, downloadable from "Our brochures".
A rich and prosperous town since the 10th century, Le Conquet was repeatedly visited by the Normans and the English. On July 30, 1558, after an Anglo-Dutch fleet had plundered the town, it was destroyed in such a way that it was never able to regain its former prosperity. However, the fishing industry persisted.
Its glorious maritime past can be seen in its stonework, opulent houses, old port and shops... Le Conquet has preserved its maritime identity and is now one of Finistère's leading ports, renowned for its shellfish and noble fish. Some 40 boats are employed in inshore fishing. This identity is reinforced by the presence of the companies handling passenger and freight traffic to the islands of Molène and Ouessant.
In addition to its ancient, densely urbanized character, with narrow streets, squares and stone walls, Le Conquet also boasts vast, open natural spaces, with dunes, beaches and a ria. These areas are listed and protected and offer a particularly interesting variety of flora and fauna.
