The world of black boats

Discover the world of black boats on the Bertheaume fort site. Just a stone's throw from Ile Longue, the cradle of France's submarine deterrent force, our heritage rooms are housed in two former Vauban gunpowder and ammunition storage casemates, converted by the AGSM Minerve association.

The exhibits take you through the history of submarines from 1800 to the present day, and explore daily life on board a nuclear-powered submarine (SNLE) and a diesel-electric submarine (SMD).
You'll discover the watch stations dedicated to piloting, diving safety, operating the nuclear boiler room and propulsion, the tactical environment and weapons systems.

During your visit, former volunteer submariners will share their experience of this mysterious and little-known world with you, and answer all your questions.
