Why take advantage?

The beautiful ruins at Pointe Saint-Mathieu bear witness to an intense religious life in these parts since ancient times. The Abbaye Saint-Mathieu de Fine Terre is open to visitors all year round. The Abbey Museum contains a wealth of information to help you understand its history.

Saint-Mathieu de Fine Terre Abbey: legendary

With its high cross vaults and Romanesque pillars, first use your senses: the atmosphere here is supernatural! Then come the history: you'll discover that these are the remains of an abbey church built from the 11th century onwards, then remodeled in the 14th and 16th centuries. Until the French Revolution, Benedictine monks prayed, worked and welcomed numerous pilgrims who came to venerate the relic of the apostle Saint-Mathieu. That over the course of time, it has undergone several invasions and many changes, without ever revealing the enigma of its origins: according to legend, Saint-Tanguy founded it as early as the 6th century... Visit the top of the Saint-Mathieu lighthouse and the Musée de l'Abbaye de Saint-Mathieu to admire this monument in all its splendor.

Visit the Abbey Museum

Here you'll discover a historical exhibition on the settlement of the site, monastic life, the abbey's role in history and the watchtower role once played by the monks. Photos and models detail the architecture of the Gothic building. A 17-minute film, "Saint-Mathieu, l'abbaye du bout du monde", is also presented. In season, guided tours and events are organized by the "Les Amis de Saint-Mathieu" association.
